Traveling PEZ Raises Money For Cancer Charity Posted by Paul on June 8,2005:
The following letter was sent from Jennie Williams to introduce the project.
I know that all of us have somehow been touched by cancer, and many of us are very involved in fundraising for various organizations that deal with cancer research and treatment. Chris (aka Pez D. Spencer), and I (aka woopideedoo) have come up with an idea to involve anyone who wants to participate in a fundraising event that is sure to be a success.
The basic premise of the fundraiser was borrowed from the Traveling Earth Pez Project at pezcommunity.com, in which an Earth Pez is sent from person to person who signed up, each person takes photos and writes in a journal about the pez’s experience, and at the end of it’s journey, it will be auctioned off and the proceeds donated to a designated charity.
With our idea, Chris and I have decided to send off a traveling Breast Cancer Awareness Pez, along with a journal, and at the end of ITS journey, auction the dispenser, journal, and a photo album off, with the proceeds being donated to the American Cancer Society via a Relay For Life event at Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky.
I, and one of my sorority sisters were appointed co-chairs of next year’s Relay at MSU, and it will be held at the end of April 2006. Chris and I are contacting quite a few celebrities and media to get attention to this project. (Celebrities names and media company’s names will be withheld until we have permission to announce them).
We would LOVE to have as much participation as possible!!!! I know that this is a cause very near and dear to both mine and Chris’s, and I’m sure many others hearts. In order for this event to be a success, the following guidelines must be met by each person who wishes to participate:
Since the dispenser’s travels are projected to last well past the date of Relay For Life at Morehead State, a donation of $5.00 is required to participate. (A portion of this donation will be used to cover costs of mailing that will be necessary to get media attention to the project) Once your check clears or Paypal payment is made, your name will be added to the list. This money will be put into a bank account and at the Relay at MSU, a check will be presented to the ACS on behalf of the BCA Traveling Pez. (We are currently working on setting up a bank account and paypal account for this project.) We will time the traveling so the BCA is at the event. Chris and I will BOTH be there (and others involved in this are more than welcome to attend as well). From there, BCA will continue on the journey.
A phone number, email address, and mailing address must be submitted by each participant (to travelingpez@hotmail.com) in order to keep track of the dispenser, should something happen. (This information will be kept private. The only person to have this information is the person who will be sending the dispenser to you.)
The Turn-around time (ex: receiving, photographing, writing in the journal, and mailing it off to the next person) for the dispenser must not exceed 72 hours (3 days).
At least one photograph should be taken with the dispenser. It can be snail mailed or emailed, as a photo album (as well as the journal) will be included with the auction.
The sender must email the next person who will be receiving the pez to let them know it is on its way, and to confirm their mailing address.
Each person must be able to cover the cost of priority mailing to the next participant (this should not exceed $3.85) unless the participant resides outside the United States (in these circumstances, it will be dealt with on a case by case basis).
We know that asking for donations upfront may be a bit presumptuous, but Chris and I both have both been involved in fundraising projects in the past, and feel that this is a great way to raise funds for cancer research during the travels of the BCA pez. If there are any questions or concerns, Chris and I would both be more than happy to share a few of our past projects with you.
Once we receive your responses we will begin letting you know all the details and where and when to send your checks. I hope that these guidelines don’t discourage anyone from participating, as they are only made to keep the project fun for everyone.
We are looking for a website for this project. Can anyone help? If so, please send an email to travelingpez@hotmail.com . We’d really appreciate it! We are working on having stickers designed for the pez, and hopefully a magnet or sticker for cars!
I would ALSO like to propose a contest for ANYONE, regardless of age or whether or not they participate in this fundraiser. The contest is this: Come up with a name for the Traveling Pez Dispenser, and email it to travelingpez@hotmail.com. I will accept entries until June 10th 2005. The winner will receive a Breast Cancer Awareness Pez dispenser!
